Bob Macar, 67, of Tampa, FL passed away on June 19, 2019. He was born in 1952, in Uniontown, PA, relocating to Tampa in 1970. A lifelong musician and band leader, Bob performed live music in various Tampa Bay area establishments between the early 1970s through the spring of 2019, including ten years with the Macar Brothers band and in family-owned jazz venues, “Smart Alex” and “Maestro’s.” The jazz album “Cosmos Kid” he co-produced with his brother Alex in 1983 received regular rotation airplay on jazz stations nationwide and reached number 16 on Billboard’s National Top 30 Jazz Chart. For the past 20 years, Bob’s 12-piece dance band SouthTown Fever performed at high profile events throughout the state. With masters degrees in Music Composition and Choral Conducting from USF, Bob also served as Music Director for over 27 years at several area Catholic Churches, including most recently the Cathedral of Saint Jude the Apostle in St. Petersburg. He was a former president of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) local chapter. He taught at the University of Tampa’s Department of Music as an adjunct professor for the past seven years. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Alex P. and Evelyn Macar, his niece, Gina Balistreri, and cousin, Michael Postlethweight. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Robin, sons, Matthew and Kevin; sister Suzi Balistreri, brothers, Richard and wife Amy, and Alex V. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, June 25, 1:00 p.m., at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 9724 Cross Creek Blvd, Tampa, FL 33647. A Celebration of Life reception will follow in the Venetian Room on the St. Mark campus. Dear Robin, my deepest sympathy and love goes to you and your family. Robert will always be Bob to me. We had a great run at Maestros Jazz Club from 1985-1987. I will always hold that memory and cherish my experience of getting to know Bob and playing music with him.I wish I could be in Tampa for the service, but unfortunately,
I am unable to be there. I will be there in spirit...

I'm very saddened. Bob was a part of my early years as a singer on the beaches and he always had a positive outlook concerning how we could all improve and the new projects that could be imagined. I'll never forget seeing him up in CA when he visited every now and again, going out of his way to stop by and hear us play. He came by one of my gigs when I started playing solo guitar here and was very encouraging.
His presence in this town will be so missed and my heart goes out to the Macar family.
Here's to a life well lived, Bob. You had music, a great marriage/family and love from your friends. Rest In Paradise.

On behalf of the entire Merrill family of Most Holy Redeemer Church, I wish to express our deep sadness on Bob's passing. He was such an important part of our worship at MHR. Although he had already left the parish, he came back at our request to do the music for the funeral Mass of our mother, Miriam Merrill, in December 2017. Rest in peace Bob, and our condolences to his family.

Dearest Robin, Matt & Kevin,
When I think of Bob Macar, I get a smile on my face. The man who never grew tired of his love of music, family or friends. He was a passionate, driven and honest man. Bob also had a terrific sense of humor. He had to, to work with some of us musicians. I will always remember him as a very good mentor and friend! Bob will be dearly missed.
Thank you Bob for making this world a cooler place. I hope you are at peace.

First, my deepest condolences for Bob’s family.
When I came from the Netherlands for my exchange year at the University of Tampa I had the honor to get piano lessons from Bob. His interest, enthusiasm, and cheerfulness has always sparked my inspiration and always made my day. Now, 2 years later I would still describe him, together with my guitar teacher and Bob’s good friend Tom, as my favorite professors.

i was shocked and saddened to see in the paper Bob's passing. We first met professionally when he and his wonderful band played at my wife and my 25th wedding anniversary. From there a friendship blossomed. We would see him at events throughout the area and he always welcomed us warmly and graciously. He even allowed me to sing with his band on numerous occasions. I am not very good, but a tribute to him and his band, they even made me sound "decent." (No small feat) He will be sorely missed, but heaven gained a new band leader

Was so saddened to see Bob's obituary in the newspaper today. We were fortunate to have had SouthTown Fever play at both of our daughters weddings. Also enjoyed listening to their music at many UCH Xmas parties in the past. Bob was a joy to work with. I remember him playing in the past for Modern Dance classes at USF. Rest in peace dear Bob.

You lead us with spirit at St. Jude's Choir for a year and taught us your love for music and the purpose of the rest between the beats.... the music layers being like waves at the beach. Rest well my friend - I know you are jamming with the angels now! Peace and prayers to Robin and boys. Your dad was unique and his eyes would light up when he talked about you boys and shared funny stories with us.

To Robin, Matt, and Kevin. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Bob, and want to share my condolences with the family. The bond you shared as a family was always plainly evident, and an inspiration. Having worked with him for 15 years, he made a significant mark on my musical life and experiences. He always showed his appreciation for my work, but would never let me get away with less than I had the capability to accomplish. I am grateful for having known Bob, having played music with him, and having come to know and spend time with his wonderful family.

Robin, I was sad to hear of Bob's passing last week. While I did not know your husband, it is obvious from these kind and loving tributes that he influenced many along his earthly journey. His mindfulness of others, hard work, and dedication to his craft, were a blessing to everyone he met. May you be comforted with your loving memories and the power of the Holy Spirit. My deepest condolences to you and your family. Brian

I had the pleasure of playing drums for Bob at the 6pm Mass the past two years. He was a kind, considerate, and very funny guy. As his skills and experience were far beyond mine, he was always supportive and encouraging.

Please know that I pray for him and for your family during this time and times ahead.

Blessings,

I was so sad to hear of Bob's passing. He was a soulful musician, a thoughtful and caring teacher, and all-around humanitarian. I "grew up" in Maestro's and Smart Alex (where I lived right around the corner), and went to high school with Rich. What a truly talented family.... and Tampa will miss this star. My sincere condolences the entire entire Macar family.

I had the pleasure of being one of Bob's section leaders at Most Holy Redeemer Church where he was a music director for a number of years. I can honestly say that he had a great impact on my musical career as well as my life by offering me different opportunities that I would not have had without his Direction. I will always remember making a couple of different CDs with him for the church and also his song which he wrote" Look for the love". My condolences to his family members and friends.
